Reducing Plastic Waste at ECC
Catering manager Lloyd Wakeling outlines the initiatives taken so far this year.
-
The college has stopped buying all plastic cups for water fountains, asking that staff and students bring their own bottles and cups.
-
We are in the process of stopping the use of plastic cutlery and replacing them with a compactible wooden version.
-
We are now using recycled paper cups for some of our hot items instead of polystyrene trays.
-
Most of our vegetables are now brought in loose instead of sealed bags on our insistence.
-
We try and use either foil or paper (recycled) to wrap our grab and go food in.
-
We have a reusable cup drive for our coffees in the post 16 café, where we either sell cups made from rice starch or customers bring their own cups to fill.
-
We have a zero to landfill contract with our waste disposal company.
-
Our food waste in separated and used for compost.
-
We only use paper straws and not plastic
